Do amor e outros demónios #25

Depois fico paralisada e o vazio e o silêncio invadem-me

Livro: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Sinopse
Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

"Ashame of what? Oh Loving Dante?"

I got to thinking that poems were like people. Some people you got right off the bat. Some people you just didn't get--and never would get.”

“Sometimes, all you have to do is tell people the truth. They won't believe you. After that, they'll leave you alone.”

"Summer was here again. Summer, summer, summer. I loved and hated summers. Summers had a logic all their own and they always brought something out in me. Summer was supposed to be about freedom and youth and no school and possibilities and adventure and exploration. Summer was a book of hope. That's why I loved and hated summers. Because they made me want to believe.”

Livro: Sorta Like a Rock Star by Matthew Quick

Sinopse
Amber Appleton lives in a bus. Ever since her mom's boyfriend kicked them out, Amber, her mom, and her totally loyal dog, Bobby Big Boy (aka Triple B) have been camped out in the back of Hello Yellow (the school bus her mom drives). Still, Amber, the self-proclaimed princess of hope and girl of unyielding optimism, refuses to sweat the bad stuff. But when a fatal tragedy threatens Amber's optimism--and her way of life, can Amber continue to be the rock star of hope? With an oddball cast of characters, and a heartwarming, inspiring story, this novel unveils a beautifully beaten-up world of laughs, loyalty, and hard-earned hope. The world is Amber's stage, and Amber is, well...she's sorta like a rock star. True? True

Livro: A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L. Peck

Sinopse
An ordinary family man, geologist, and Mormon, Soren Johansson has always believed he’ll be reunited with his loved ones after death in an eternal hereafter.
Then, he dies.
Soren wakes to find himself cast by a God he has never heard of into a Hell whose dimensions he can barely grasp: a vast library he can only escape from by finding the book that contains the story of his life.

In this haunting existential novella, author, philosopher, and ecologist Steven L. Peck explores a subversive vision of eternity, taking the reader on a journey through the afterlife of a world where everything everyone believed in turns out to be wrong.

“[Y]ou are here to learn something. Don’t try to figure out what it is. This can be frustrating and unproductive.”
Adorei. Excelente.

They say it has no memory #21

Imagens retiradas do Facebook.

Eram o acontecimento do Verão.

Audiobook: What the dog saw by Malcolm Gladwell

Sinopse
What is the difference between choking and panicking? Why are there dozens of varieties of mustard-but only one variety of ketchup? What do football players teach us about how to hire teachers? What does hair dye tell us about the history of the 20th century? In the past decade, Malcolm Gladwell has written three books that have radically changed how we understand our world and ourselves: The Tipping Point; Blink; and Outliers. Now, in What the Dog Saw, he brings together, for the first time, the best of his writing from The New Yorker over the same period. Here is the bittersweet tale of the inventor of the birth control pill, and the dazzling inventions of the pasta sauce pioneer Howard Moscowitz. Gladwell sits with Ron Popeil, the king of the American kitchen, as he sells rotisserie ovens, and divines the secrets of Cesar Millan, the "dog whisperer" who can calm savage animals with the touch of his hand. He explores intelligence tests and ethnic profiling and "hindsight bias" and why it was that everyone in Silicon Valley once tripped over themselves to hire the same college graduate.

Do amor e outros demónios #24

A questão teve resposta automática.

Livro: Broken Glass Park by Alina Bronsky

Sinopse
The heroine of this enigmatic, razor-sharp, and thoroughly contemporary novel is seventeen- year-old Sacha Naimann, born in Moscow. Sacha lives in Berlin now with her two younger siblings and, until recently, her mother. She is precocious, independent, skeptical and, since her stepfather murdered her mother several months ago, an orphan. Unlike most of her companions, she doesn't dream of getting out the tough housing project where they live. Her dreams are different: she wants to write a novel about her mother; and she wants to end the life of Vadim, the man who murdered her. What strikes the reader most in this exceptional novel is Sacha's voice: candid, self-confident, mature and childlike at the same time: a voice so like the voices of many of her generation with its characteristic mix of worldliness and innocence, skepticism and enthusiasm. This is Sacha's story and it is as touching as any in recent literature.

"My best moments so far have been silent ones"
" "Do you do that too?", he says as he's putting the DVD back in its case. "What?""Watch the credits. Until the very end""Yeah", I say, surprised. "Always have.""Me, too", says Felix. " At the theater, too. It bugs me when people jump up and leave as soon as the last scene is over. I always want to see who made the music and all that. So many people work on a movie - you have to give them their due by at least reading their names." "
" "Families are so difficult," I say later to Volker as he's packing up Felix's notebook computer and a few DVDs."Yes", Volker says. "Families are walking natural disasters. In my next life i want to come back as Buddhist monk. No attachments, no possessions, no hair. "
"I wish i had her problems, I think. Actually, no, I don't."

Livro: Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan

Sinopse:
A tale of books and technology, cryptography and conspiracy, friendship and love. It begins in a mysterious San Francisco bookstore, but quickly reaches out into the wider world and the shadowed past.
